About Natural Roots Wellness

Food as medicine has been the concept that is at the foundation healing since people began. People have been using plants for nutrition and healing since the beginning of humanity. In many ways, we have lost touch with the connection to the earth through all of the artificiality that we created in order to function comfortably.

Ancestral practices were stolen, oppressed and criminalized. African and indigenous people were enslaved and subjugated to exploit their long held extensive agricultural, botanical, environmental, medical and healing knowledge. Their knowledge and applications were plagiarized and used by colonists to capitalize while they were demonized and criminalized for practicing the same. Now we rely on modern medicine to heal and cure us but often by that time we are too sick.

We encourage every person to feel empowered to manage their health using all of the resources available to them (including modern/western medicine). We strive to help equip our community with the information and resources to enhance their day to day nutritional healing and home remedies through nature. Using plants for healing is a way to be proactive, preventative and interventive.

Meet the Natural Roots Wellness Team

Chef Lachelle Cunningham and Certified Master Herbalist Eva Garrett have joined forces to create Natural Roots Wellness and the Elixir Kitchen where you can join them to investigate the world of plant remedies and nutritional healing. Natural Roots Wellness is a holistic healing collective that connects with the community through workshops, retreats and activities that focus on nutritional, natural and plant remedies.

In 2018, Chef Lachelle began building The Healthy Roots Institute, with a mission focused on healing and social justice through food education, culinary arts and entrepreneurship. Through the Healthy Root Institute, Chef Lachelle curates cooking workshops and retreats, teaches culinary arts, food business classes and also provides human resources, menu development and operations consulting to local restaurants and food service establishments.

Her greater vision is to grow the Healthy Roots Institute for greater capacity to impact people through food, culinary education and entrepreneurship.

Eva Nyrie Garrett, Master Herbalist

Eva Nyrie Garret was born and raised in North Minneapolis, MN. After graduating from Patrick Henry High school, she took a position with AT&T, where she has worked for the past 20 years, evolving over time from training to hiring to technical support. In 2012, she began working for the nonprofit food justice organization, Appetite for Change, where she assisted in cultivating and managing the northside community gardens, Farmers Market and Community Cooks programs. Working with Appetite for Change helped to deepen Eva’s love for gardening as she became known in her community as Farmer Garrett, providing produce through CSA’s from her own backyard. In becoming an avid gardener, she also grew a deep connection with herbs and in 2020 obtained her Master Herbalist certification and launched her herbal business, Natural Me where she creates healing products that cleanse, nurture and treat ailments.

Now she has joined forces with Chef Lachelle Cunningham to create Natural Roots Wellness and the Elixir Kitchen, where they invite the community to explore the world of plant remedies and nutritional healing with them.
